Gardening - When to Prune

By Michael Russell Pruning that is done by the amateur gardener is carried out to maintain a plant that has been already trained in a nursery. However, many keen gardeners grow shrubs and even trees from cuttings and seed, even though it is better to leave a large tree to the experts, because of the special equipment required and the risks involved. The principles that must guide the gardener when he picks up a pair of secateurs should always be ‘a well pruned plant is a beautiful and healthy plant’ and ‘pruning well carried out should almost be undetectable’. Trees do not necessarily have to be pruned. The reason for pruning them is to shape or keep a specimen that displays the finest features of a particular species. Any work carried out should be limited to encouraging or assisting the natural development of each plant as it grows from a young tree into a fully grown one and to avoid defects that might turn out to be harmful to the tree. Shrubs can be pruned to emphasize their ornamental features but it is important to strike a balance between encouraging the production of flowers and allowing the plant to continue to grow and develop. Another objective in pruning is to maintain the characteristic form of each species, encouraging the branches and stems to develop and grow in a way that allows the plant to achieve its natural potential. Sometimes pruning is needed to encourage the growth of a properly balanced plant. The weakest shoots may need to be cut back hard to one, two or three shoots to stimulate vigorous growth or it may be necessary to reduce by two or three shoots only the most vigorous and strongly growing branches so as not to put too much stress on the plant’s other stems. Pruning is also carried out to maintain the youngest shoots which are the most productive. The last but by no means the least important aim in pruning is to protect the plant’s health. All branches that are dry, diseased, broken or damaged in any way should be removed by cutting into the nearest healthy wood immediately above a well-developed shoot. Smaller branches that are too slender, too thick or that cross in the center of the plant or any that are badly positioned should also be removed by cutting at the base of the young wood but not the main branch from which it is growing. These actions, which are intended to eliminate possible sources of disease and to maintain an open, regular shape into which sun and air can penetrate freely, should be carried out annually on all plants regardless of when they flower. In areas with a very hot climate this can be the end of summer. In cold areas it is better to wait until the end of winter. Where there is snow it is prudent to anticipate possible damage and in autumn cut the longest braches back or tie them into bundles. Observation and an understanding of the ways in which a plant grows are useful when deciding if and when to prune. First it is important to check whether the plant flowers on wood grown during the same year as the flowering taking place or on wood that grew in a previous year. This knowledge will dictate the best time to prune. Long Live Halloween!

By Karen Fusco The scent of fall is in the air and the colors of the season are gracing our landscapes. Know what that means? Halloween is right around the corner! Children everywhere are counting the weeks until this festive day arrives while parents wonder if their children should be allowed to trick or treat and whether today’s world is safe enough for the Halloween traditions of days gone by. Well I say LONG LIVE HALLOWEEN! How can we deny our children the only day of the year when they are allowed to run up and down the street begging neighbors for candy? How can we deny them the pleasure of dressing up as superheroes and princesses and gallivanting around a neighborhood that’s been transformed into a one-night fantasy land? While I believe Halloween should be enjoyed, I do believe we should take some safety measures to ensure our children have a safe Halloween in addition to having a fun one. A Watchful Eye. If you have young children who will be trick-or-treating this year, you need to realize that we live in a changing society. You need to keep a very close eye on your children and that means following along (even if from a few feet behind) as your children go door to door on their trick-or-treating mission. Setting Ground Rules. Halloween isn’t the time for a free-for-all. You need to set some ground rules. Let your children know what’s acceptable, what’s not, and what you expect from them in regard to their behavior. If the rules are laid out up front, there will be less confusion and, hopefully, less frustration all around. Bright Clothing or Reflectors. It can seem like kids are swarming through the neighborhoods on Halloween night. Drivers need to be especially careful, but not all are as careful as they should be. Because of this, you need to take extra precautions. Don’t let your children cross the street without you and when you do cross the street, make sure you have reflective clothing or a glow-in-the-dark nightstick with you. Candy Checks. As sad as it may be, you do need to check your child’s candy after they bring in the haul. Look for anything out of the ordinary. Throw away any unwrapped items, items with wrappers that look as if they’ve been tampered with, etc. And take care that not too much of the good stuff is eaten all in one sitting! So is Halloween a dying holiday? Absolutely not! You just need to take the time to lay out ground rules and practice proper safety, and Halloween can be as much fun this year as it was when you were a kid! Watch out for those ghosts and goblins! How Compatible Are You and Your Partner?

By Kim Olver What are the things you argue about? Where are the disagreements? The small resentments? Where do you have to give in to get along? Do you argue over money? Are you fighting over sex? Do you have different ideas about how much time you should spend together and apart? Do you squabble over extended family and friends? Is one of you daring and reckless, while the other wants to play things safe? Does one of you want to be right all the time? Does one of you want to always be in control? Do you disagree about the fun activities in your life? Couples may have conflict over many areas but do you know there is a simple explanation for the conflict? When looking for a life partner, it is a good idea to take a close look at your Need Strength Profile, based on Dr. William Glassers work in the area of Choice Theory. This simple assessment will determine where you and your partner are in terms of the five basic needs and help you determine what areas are compatible and what areas should generate discussion and possible compromise and negotiation. There is a free assessment at www.therelationshipcenter.biz on the “Free Stuff” page that will provide a rudimentary understanding of where you are with regard to the five basic human needs of Choice Theory—love & belong, survival, power, freedom and fun. If you are seeking compatibility in a relationship, you and your partner can both take this assessment and then discuss your results based on the rest of this article. The first need is called love & belonging. It is the need that determines how much connection you require with others. Generally speaking, relationships work best when you have equivalent strengths of the love & belonging need. This is the need that will help you determine as a couple how much time you spend together and how much time is needed apart. Loving sex and romance is another aspect of this need, as are extended family and friends. The second of the five basic needs is survival. This is so much more than just the need to physically survive, although that is part of it. It is also the psychological need to feel safe and secure. Areas of potential conflict around this need involve the ability to adapt to change, how you spend and save money, preparations one makes for safety, spontaneity, among other things. The third of the human needs is power, which can be a difficult need to understand because power generally has a negative connotation associated with it. When people hear “power” they often think of one person exerting their power over another person. While this is one way, albeit not the best way, to meet one’s power need, there are two other ways which are more responsible and palatable. There are three ways to meet one’s need for power—power over others, power with others and power within ourselves. Power over others is not a responsible way to meet one’s power need because it interferes with the other person getting his or her needs met. There are plenty of people who use power over others but I am advocating for the other two ways when seeking compatibility in relationships. When people have a high need for power, they are born driven to get this need met. They dont know how to get it met; they just know they must find power. Often, you can observe in small children the tendency to power over others. Then, hopefully, life teaches children the other two ways to seek power. When you look for “power with” others, it means that you are able to work cohesively with a group of people to advance toward a common goal. Many winning sports teams display this “power with” concept, as well as effective work teams and even fully functioning families. “Power with” others can be a very satisfying way of meeting ones power needs. The final way to meet ones need for power is “power within” oneself. This is generally seen as a need for pride or competence. Those with a high power need who meet it through power within methods like to always do their best. They may seem to be perfectionistic but producing their best is very need satisfying to them. In relationships, this power need accounts for workaholism, people who always need to control everything around them and a low degree of tolerance for imperfection in others. The power need has a big influence in interpersonal relationships. The fourth need to discuss is the need for freedom. People with a high need for freedom are independent and like to do things their own way. High freedom need people generally don’t like rules—particularly ones that don’t make sense. They also value their time alone. They like to do what they want, when they want. There is usually an inverse relationship between the love & belonging and the freedom needs. When a person has a high need for love & belonging, he or she typically has a lower need for freedom and vice versa. Of course, there are exceptions but typically there is an opposite relationship between the two. The last of Choice Theorys basic human needs is fun. Fun seems pretty straightforward but there are some subtleties to it that are necessary to understand. There are basically three kinds of fun. There is the loud, energetic kind of fun that people might get from physical activity and parties, for example. There is the quiet, relaxing kind of fun that might be enjoyed by fishing, lying in a hammock on a warm summers day or reading for pleasure. Then there is learning as fun. Now, Im not talking about when you learned algebra! For most of us that wasnt fun but I am talking about learning something you are interested in that has useful application for you. For me, the best example is when I learned how to downhill ski and made it the first time down the slope without falling and getting snow down my jacket, up my pant legs and various other places! It is the sheer joy of learning something that interests you. Everyone has various ways of meeting their fun needs and it is these differences that can drastically affect your satisfaction in your relationship. It is not always true that in order for your relationship to succeed, you must have equal or almost equal need strengths in all five needs. For some needs, it is best when one of you is high and one of you is low in that need. Go to www.TheRelationshipCenter.biz and take the free assessment today. Its on the Free Stuff page, with a link provided on the home page. See what the assessment has to say. Lose Weight Permanently - No. 10 - Cut Out Fats

By Eric Hartwell You have made a great decision to go on a diet and lose that weight. But how do you give up the things you love? It can be so hard cruel even! But, the fact is that some foods make you fat and there is no place for them. So, when you start this diet, make sure you eliminate more fat from your diet. Limiting fatty food intake will help in a weight loss program. Fat is, well, fattening. It is the scourge of people that need to lose weight. It may taste nice but it is no good for you. Nearly everything that contains fat will not only make you gain weight (or make it more difficult to lose weight) but will also add to your overall health risk (heart and blood vessel disease). Fat has 9 calories per gram and proteins and carbohydrates have only 4 calories per gram. So it makes sense to avoid fat if at all possible. Try to cut down on fatty meat, butter, cooking oil and such like. Those nice cakes and pastries you love so much are out. Live with it there will be long term benefits if you can stick it out. Foods that contain less fat are also, in general, healthier foods. They can look nice, smell nice and taste nice. They do not give you the health risks that fats can and, in addition, they can help with other things such as vitamin levels and daily roughage. So, cut out fats and fattening foods and your diet will be well on the way to a successful outcome. Foreclosure And How To Avoid It

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Alberta_Thomas]Alberta Thomas Foreclosure occurs when the homeowner falls behind in monthly mortgage payments and defaults on the loan. The lender repossesses or sells the home in order to satisfy the debt. The best and most sensible way to avoid falling into default and having the lender foreclose on you is to make timely mortgage payments. Several steps can be taken to ensure your capability to pay your mortgage on time each month. Strategies to employ to safeguard against default Purchase only what you can afford. Shop around for the best possible mortgage term and rates. Steer clear of non-traditional mortgage loans. Live within your means. Set up a financial budget and stick to it. Set up a rainy day fund for mortgage payments in case of a financial set back. Prepare for the unexpected and plan financial changes accordingly. Dont count on tomorrows income. Realize that your income may stagnate while your debts increase. What to do if a foreclosure occurs Circumstances change constantly. The financial climate fluctuates almost as frequently as the weather. Unexpected medical costs, a death in the family, the loss of a job- all of these can negatively impact on the financial situation of a homeowner. Therefore, the worst possible event, a foreclosure, might occur. A foreclosure will have a negative impact on your credit rating and have long reaching impact into your future borrowing ability. Avoid foreclosure at all costs, even if it means giving your home to the lender. Either way you lose your home, but with the second, you maintain some credit worthiness. Borrow money from friends and family to catch up on your mortgage payments. Only do this if you intend to fully pay them back and believe that you will have the means to do so. Agree to a realistic date for repayment of the personal loan. Contact a housing counseling agency that has been approved by HUD. In general, these agencies provide free counseling. Additionally, they might be able to offer government services or programs that can help you out of this situation. In some locations, they might be able to direct you to local community organizations that give assistance to homeowners in need. Contact your lender immediately and respond to any correspondence that you have received from them. Explain your current financial situation, the immediate outlook of your finances, and your need to rearrange your payment schedule. Bring supporting documents with you when you speak to your lender. This will help to show your sincerity. Lenders may often attempt to remedy the situation with a little creative financing rather than go through the process of a foreclosure. After all, the lender simply wants to have the loan repaid. Possible remedies to the foreclosure A mortgage modification happens when the lender changes the term of the loan by adding additional months or years to the mortgage. In turn, this will lower the monthly payments and prevent a foreclosure. Again, the borrower must be able to show evidence that he will be able to meet the new payments. A special forbearance is a process in which the lender arranges a repayment plan that works within the borrowers current financial status. This might lead to a suspension of the monthly payments for a short time or at least a reduction in the expected amount. It is extremely important that financial documentation be provided that indicate the viability of this plan through the homeowners ability to meet the new payment schedule. A partial claim involves a one-time offer from the FHA-insurance fund that allows a one-time payment to get the homeowners mortgage current. The homeowner will need to sign a promissory note in which a promise to repay the loan is made. A lien is placed upon the home for this additional amount of money. Two conditions exist- the borrower must be able to begin full mortgage payments and must have been at least 4 months delinquent in payments but less than 12 months delinquent. A pre-foreclosure would allow the homeowner to sell the house for less than what is owed. However, the sale is not listed as a foreclosure, so it does not hurt the homeowners credit rating. A deed-in-lieu of foreclosure requires the homeowner to give the home to the lender. Although the homeowner loses the property, he maintains some of his credit rating. The benefit will be realized later should the individual decide to apply for another loan. Important points to remember Make sure that you can afford what you buy. Make your monthly payments in full and on time. Make a plan and stick to it.
